Entry to Competitions

The Club's Competition Bye-laws are explained below for those members who wish to enter competitions held at Birchwood Golf Club.

1) Full and Intermediate male members with an official club handicap are entitled to enter weekend competitions.

2) Draws will usually take place at 8.30 pm on the Friday 8 or 9 days before the competition date. Occasionally, they will take place a week earlier. Draw dates will be posted on the notice boards.

3) Tickets for entry into the draw will be available 30 minutes before the draw takes place. Mr Captain and members of the Competitions Committee performing the draw are allowed to enter the name of one member each, plus themselves, before the draw commences.

4) Committee members involved in closing that competition and turning on the computer are allowed to enter their own names only or take a ticket to enter 2 names as permitted in rule 5.

5) When your number is drawn you may enter your name and that of another member on the entry sheet. If your name is on the sheet already you may not add another name when your number is drawn.

6) If you enter the name of another member, please ensure that member is informed. If he then fails to play, you may incur a 2 competition ban as indicated below.

7) At the conclusion of the draw you may add 2 names to the start sheet or the reserve list. If you wish to add more names you should return to the back of the queue.

8) A Reserve and Scratch Sheet will be posted during the week prior to the competition. The Competitions’ Committee will update the sheet by 9.00 pm on the Friday prior to the competition.

9) Entries to competitions can be made on the Saturday or Sunday (but not for drawn competitions) by contacting the Professional.

10) Before playing in any official competition members MUST book in and sign the entry book in the professional’s shop otherwise they will be disqualified. Members are responsible for ensuring that a scorecard is correctly marked with Player’s Name, Date, Competition name, Start and Finish times.

11) A competition will be declared abandoned if less than half the players complete their round.

12) Members changing their start times with the professional should write a letter to the Competitions’ Chairman explaining the reason for the change.

13) The professional may change start times at his discretion to ensure all players have a partner.

Juniors

1) Junior members of single handicap may enter their names on the reserve sheet after 5.00pm on the Sunday prior to the competition.

2) lf a junior wins a prize, a token memento will be presented to him and in the case of winning a board competition, his name will be recorded on the board as the winner.

Procedure on Completion of Your Round

Members must enter their scores for Singles and Aggregate Competitions into the club computer using their issued swipe card or by scrolling to their names. Once submitted, (either handed to the professional or placed in the box under the input facility for the computer), no alteration to cards will be permitted. Players failing to return cards will be disqualified. Failure to enter scores into the computer for relevant competitions will result in a ban for the next 2 competition draws.

Failure to Play

Members who scratch from a competition following the posting of the sheet on a Friday or fail to turn up to play, will incur a ban for the next 2 competition draws. A letter should be written to the Competitions’ Chairman who may rescind the ban or apply it to the member who entered you for that competition without informing you. If you are unable to play for any reason, it is good manners to apologise to your playing partners.

Prizes

1) To be eligible to win a prize, a member must, within the previous 12 months have either:

handed in 3 cards to receive a handicap

or had 3 scores, including competitions, away scores or supplementary rounds, entered into the computer

or produced a full handicap certificate from another club with at least 3 scores in the 12 month period prior to the competition.

Drawn Competitions

1) Names entered at the Friday Draw will be redrawn within the hour band selected by the player using a random draw by the computer.

2) The reserve list will consist of one hour bands within which you might be allocated any time. There is no limit to the number of hour bands that can be selected.

3) Entry can also be made on the Saturday prior to a Sunday Drawn Competition by contacting the Professional. You should inform the professional the hour bands you wish to play and should there be suitable available times, you will be allocated a start time at random.

4) Entries to Drawn Competitions cannot be made on the day of the competition.

5) You cannot change your starting time within the hour boundary you have selected.

6) The professional may change start times at his discretion to ensure all players have a partner.

Results

The Competitions Committee will aim to have all results, unless subject to disputes and enquiries, posted within 48 hours of the completion of a competition.

Should a card play off be needed to determine a result, the net scores in a handicap competition or the gross scores in the Club Championship, will be used as follows:

  • Last 9 holes
  • Last 6 holes
  • Last 3 holes
  • 18th hole
  • First 9 holes
  • First 6 holes
  • First 3 holes
  • First hole

Should this not determine the winner, a tie shall be declared, and prizes won shared equally.

Presentation Nights

1) All winners of prizes are expected to attend the relevant presentation evening to collect their prize. If a member is unable to attend, another member may be nominated to collect the prize on their behalf and the Captain must be sent a letter of apology. Failure to comply will result in loss of prize.

2) Male prize winners (or their nominated member) must wear a jacket and tie at the presentation. Invitation Days 1) To be eligible to enter, 3 or more completed score cards must have been submitted the previous season or a full handicap certificate with at least 3 scores from the previous season handed to the Competition’s Committee. 2) Weekend Invitation days are for Full and Intermediate male members to invite members from other affiliated golf clubs to play in competition. Such entry is for amateur golfers only who have an official club handicap. There will be an entry fee payable at the time of entering the competition. The draw for tee times will be done at least 3 weeks prior to the date of the competition. Entries after the draw date can be made by contacting the Professional, to whom payment should be made. Refunds will only be given if your time is taken by another member.

3) Prizes will be presented as soon as possible after the last group has finished. If the member and his partner are unable to collect a prize in person, a brief letter addressed to the Captain should be left with the Professional. Another member should be nominated to receive the prize on their behalf. Visiting prize winners may have their handicap validated at the discretion of the Competition’s Committee. Prize winners are expected to wear a jacket and tie at the presentation.
